THINGS TO DO

Mineola Chamber of Commerce
Is the heart of local business support, community events, and promotion in this charming Wood County town. Founded in 1947, the Chamber works to help businesses thrive, foster economic growth, and celebrate everything that makes Mineola special—historic downtown, friendly residents, and East Texas hospitality.

Downtown Mineola
Downtown Mineola is a beautifully preserved slice of small-town Texas history. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as the Mineola Downtown Historic District since 2013), this walkable area features buildings mostly from 1885–1960, with classic brick storefronts, ornate details, and nods to Mineola's railway heritage (trash cans shaped like train smokestacks!). It's the perfect spot for a relaxed afternoon of shopping, eating, and soaking up local vibes.

Mineola Depot and Railroad Museum
Also known as the Historic Depot Museum or Transportation Plaza, is a must-visit for train enthusiasts, history buffs, or anyone who loves small-town Texas charm. This beautifully restored 1906 Texas & Pacific Railway depot (later used by Missouri Pacific) now serves as both an active Amtrak Texas Eagle stop and a charming museum celebrating Mineola's deep railroad roots.

Iron Horse Square
A beautiful 5-acre public park right in the heart of historic downtown Mineola. Dedicated to celebrating the rich railroad heritage of Mineola, Wood County, and East Texas, this vibrant space sits between Front and Commerce Streets, right alongside the active Union Pacific Railroad tracks and adjacent to the historic Mineola Depot (Amtrak station and Railroad Museum).
It's a joint project of the Mineola Landmark Commission, Parks & Open Spaces Board, and City of Mineola, blending history, education, recreation, and community events into one inviting spot.

Historic Select Theater
Also known as the Select Theater or partnered with Lake Country Playhouse, is one of East Texas's most cherished cultural gems. Opened in 1920 by Mr. and Mrs. R.T. Hooks Sr., this single-screen venue is recognized as one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in Texas—a true living piece of history in the heart of downtown Mineola at 114 N. Johnson Street.
Designated a historic landmark in 1998, the theater has been lovingly preserved and restored while staying true to its roots: classic brick exterior, nostalgic interior charm, and an affordable snack bar that's a fraction of big-city prices. It's a non-profit community treasure where generations of locals have enjoyed first-run movies, live performances, and special events.

Grand Saline Salt Palace
The Grand Saline Salt Palace (also called the Salt Palace Museum or Salt Palace Museum and Visitors Center) is one of the quirkiest and most fascinating attractions in East Texas. This small, one-story building in downtown Grand Saline is the only structure in the world (or at least North America) made entirely of pure rock salt blocks—harvested from the massive salt dome right beneath the town.
Grand Saline sits atop one of the largest and purest salt deposits in the U.S.—a dome estimated at 16,000–20,000 feet deep, with enough salt to last another 20,000 years. Morton Salt has mined it since 1931 (you'll see "GS" on the bottom of some Morton salt containers). The town’s name literally means "big salt" in French, and salt has been central here since the 1800s (even supplying the Confederacy during the Civil War).
